Fraudulent Tech-Support Message is Victimizing Users

If you have Windows, you may automatically be a target. A fraudulent tech-support message is victimizing Windows users successfully as they try to get rid of this persistent pop-up.

There has been a pop-up that randomly occurs while browsing the Internet.  The pop-up seems to be from Microsoft, alerting the user that their Windows computer is infected and is now locked.

The message continues to say that closing the webpage will not resolve the issue, but rather lead to your computer being disabled and further damage the network.  In the message, it discloses how your Facebook login, credit card information, email credentials, data, and browsing history are at risk.

The user is then instructed to contact a number that would guide them through a computer restoration process within five minutes of receiving the message or all data would be lost from your computer.  Dialing that number would ensure victimization.

How Pop-Up is Activated

This pop-up is activated by an advertisement which will redirect the user to the site where the scam is present.  Ads may be placed by adware which could already be on sites for additional revenue or installed on your computer prior.

In most cases, you can close your web browser from where the pop-up came from.  Then, continue using your computer without interruption as long as you avoid that site where the pop-up originated from.  If the pop-up is persistent, it may be malware-based, therefore, you would need to exact it from your computer.

Eliminating Persistent Pop-Up

Recognizing a scam is half the battle.  If closing the browser doesn’t resolve the pop-up, following this process should get rid of these annoying messages:

  • Click on the Windows search box in the lower-left corner
  • Search for Task Manager
  • Open Task Manager
  • Right-click on the browser you have open listed under the Processes tab and click End — If you have multiple tabs open, repeat this step for each tab

The police advise users to do the following as well to protect themselves:

  • Don’t call numbers from pop-up messages.
  • Never allow remote access to your computer.
  • Always be wary of unsolicited calls. If you’re unsure of a caller’s identity, hang up.
  • Never divulge passwords or PIN codes.
  • Remember: Microsoft or someone on their behalf will never call you.
